WHAT I'M READING

I finished both THE BROTHER'S KARAMASOV &  DRAGONFLY IN AMBER this week. You couldn't pick two more different tomes to read concurrently, but I thoroughly enjoyed both. I had A LOT of late nights this week and reading is one thing that helps my mind disengage and stop worrying about everything else. (Because there is SO MUCH GOING ON RIGHT NOW!!!)

WHAT I'M WRITING

After writing 4K last week, I wrote diddly squat this week. Bupkis. Zilch. I seem to be doing that a lot lately- Bursts of productivity followed by periods of "there aren't enough hours in each day" freak-outs. Hoping to have a little more time to write in November for NanoWriMo, but honestly, I really don't know. I did manage to make a little progress on my edits, so there's that.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO

So after turning in my two weeks notice to quit Evil Day Job (much rejoicing!!), I've been trying to wrap up all sorts of loose ends. Annnd trying to get everything ready for Shiny New Life. Even with all the advance prep I did, it's still been a whirlwind. Here's what I'm doing for Shiny New Life in case you're interested and/or didn't already know- Biotica EcoTours

Then of course there's the Halloween Party. Those of you who know me, know how epic Halloween is at our house. As in live bands, fire breathers, building a stage for said bands & trying to turn my house into a black and white circus tent...because PRIORITIES! Our theme for this year is
Cirque du Mort. (Think Day of the Dead meets Creepy Circus) And we are having too much fun with it. Seriously. Crossing my fingers that the cops don't show up again this year. I've bribed/placated/invited all the neighbors within a four block radius, so hopefully we can revel until the wee hours unmolested.

Oh, and our band (which is still nameless in case any of you have suggestions) is going to play a live set at the Halloween party this year. So I also get to try on a few new songs I wrote...and possibly get myself arrested for violating the Noise Ordinance because my shiny new Marshall amp goes to 11. *evil grin*

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW
  • All things Creepy Circus
  • Making things- sculpted ibex horns, giant skeleton puppets, massive black & white pinwheels with fireworks on them, Day of the Dead homebrew, 150 tamales *whew* *wipes sweat from forehead* oh and....
  • Shiny New Life starts October 15th!

  1. Ohmygosh, can I come to your Halloween party?! It sounds amazing! I think it's awesome that you have a party every year.
And I think you should call your band "Noise Ordinance". Haha.

  3. Love that collage at the top of the page! You're making me want to reread THE NIGHT CIRCUS right now!! (I don't have time, unfortunately, but still.) That Halloween party sounds phenomenal. Fingers crossed that your neighbours cut you some slack and the cops stay far, far away. You should just call your band Nameless or Sine Nomine or John/Jane Doe. (You know, since you don't have a name.) :P Kidding, of course. I hope everything goes swimmingly with your Shiny New Life, Kris. I know how much you've been looking forward to this. Have a wonderful week! :-)

  7. Oh my gosh, your Halloween party sounds like SO much fun! I can only imagine how cool the costumes will be and I love that you're having living bands play in your yard--and that you're in one of the bands! Your creative ambitions put me to shame! I hope the next couple weeks flies by so that your shiny new life gets here fast! Good luck with tying up loose ends!

  8. Oooh, if you like creepy circus things, I have a movie recommendation for you. It's a short horror film/musical (not gory horror, though) called The Devil's Carnival. It retells 3 Aesop's Fables in hell. The aesthetic of the movie, everything from the costumes and the lighting and the design and music and these amazing vocalists...I can't even describe the awesome. It's not exactly kid-friendly, but if you like dark stuff, you'll probably like that movie.

  10. To really wrap things up and begin anew, your band should be called Shiny New Life.

*pops champagne* This should be done everyday from now until the shiny new life begins. And then twice that day, just because.....

I'm doing a Zombie craft night for Halloween at work. Just finished blood splattering everything....so, you know, that's how things are in my neck of the woods. Can't wait to see some photos of your terrifying Creepy Circus!! (And uh, can I steal the idea for next year, please?)

  11. So, Shiny New Life has a very pretty website. :) Your party sounds AMAZING! And it makes me wish I lived closer to you. Also: You're in a band?!? Whaaat? Is there anything you don't do? Are you a singer, or do you play an instrument ... or both? Inquiring minds want to know! :) Have a great week, Kris!

  12. Your EcoTour company looks great! Best of luck! Maybe the YABs should have a writing retreat in your neck of the woods so we can take a tour together! :)

Your Halloween party sounds awesome too! I always wish I had something exciting to do for Halloween. Too bad I don't live closer to you!
