I live in sunny Sarasota, Florida where I spend an
inordinate amount of time either floating around in a kayak or partially
submerged in saltwater. I have a pretty
good excuse for both of those things. I’m a Biologist and run an EcoTourism
business on the side. Basically, any day I am in a kayak is a good day.
I’ve been obsessed with books ever since I can remember.
Growing up, my dad tossed out our T.V. and instead our family would read
together.(The person reading aloud also got their back scratched. My dad made
up that rule because he was usually doing the reading.) Though the loss of our T.V. meant that I had
to sneak over to a friend’s house to watch cartoons, I think ultimately it made
for a wonderful childhood. I grew up in the fantastic worlds of C.S. Lewis,
J.R.R. Tolkien and J.M. Barrie. I was
that kid who read books under the covers late into the night until I got caught
so many times, my dad threatened to permanently take away the flashlight.
I do my best writing in my trusty hammock. (Which should probably
be a tax write off by now) There is something about being outdoors hanging
above the ferns with the sound of birdsong, frogs and the scent of moss that infuses
something in the page. The natural world begins to seep in and crystallizes
itself in ink.
I love night swimming, stomping through swamps, getting lost in good movies, getting lost in general, making crazy art projects at 3am and playing the guitar (poorly).
