Free At Last, Free At Last!!!!!
WHAT I'M READING
Continuing on with the Diana Gabaldon series, I went ahead and read VOYAGER this week. What can I say, I'm a little hooked on the characters and I wanted to know what happened.
WHAT I'M WRITING
I had very little time for writing this week. (I know what you're thinking. If I had time to read, why didn't I have time to write? The reading was Medicine. So I didn't die of Insomnia.(Don't argue) I did manage to squeak out a few Word Sprints with the YA Buccaneers crew. If nothing else, Word Sprints help you get your butt in that chair. Even if just for an hour. You should join us, we've got Word Sprints a couple times a week. And it's amazing sometimes what you can accomplish in a hour with a crew there to cheer you on.
WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO
I'm FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's official, I no longer have a day job. Or an office. Or meetings. Or florescent lights. (god I hate those things...they remind me of Joe versus the Volcano...I can feel them sucking out my life force)
Speaking of Joe vs. Volcano...as my parting gift, I bribed the IT guys to virally upload my "goodbye video". It was basically a bunch of clips from funny movies that involved evil offices. i.e. Office Space (you know that scene where they are beating the crap out of the printer? Yeah, that), Brazil (If you haven't seen it you must. It's weirdly brilliant) and you guessed it, Joe vs. Volcano. At 3pm yesterday, 3,000 office computers started playing scenes from Brazil, et al. It was wonderful! People popping up out of their cubicles like dismayed Meerkats. It may very well have been my finest moment. (In the office that is) The video ended with leaping dolphins and "So long and thanks for all the fish". (As is a fitting tribute to Douglas Adams)
Sooo....My What's Up Wednesday post is coming to you from here on out-Live from Hammock. (That is if I'm even up yet, because I also could sleep in if I want to) It's going to take a while for it to truly sink in.
That Mary Oliver quote I had tacked on my office wall that said: "What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" I have moved it to my home office with a little annotation below it that reads: "THIS".
WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW
No more of this. (It's a long clip, I know. Only watch the whole thing, if like me, you've worked crappy day jobs and need a good laugh)

I love finding characters I don't want to let go of. Just be glad there's a series ;)
ReplyDeleteYAY to your freedom. I loved Joe vs. Volcano. Most ppl look at me wierd when I admit it though.
People look at me weird when I admit that too! Just ignore those people; their sense of humor is broken. :)
DeleteCongrats on no longer having a job! I am assuming this is just what you want based on your excitement. Also, I didn't write a ton this week, but did read, so no judgement from me.
ReplyDeleteThanks! And thanks for not judging the reading a ton and writing next to zip thing. I feel much better now. ;)
DeleteYour former IT guys are A-W-E-S-O-M-E to upload your goodbye video.
ReplyDeleteAnd I so needed a nice F-U job video today, as I sit, waiting for my work servers to come back up.
Enjoy the first week of your wild and precious life :)
Thanks Jen! And it's amazing what you can get IT guys to do if you offer them beer. :) Week one of Wild and Precious Life is off to a great start!
DeleteI think time to read is so much different from time to write, so I completely understand why you'd read when you can't sleep. I would so love to see that viral video! What a hilariously fantastic idea! And I know the scene from Office Space (love that movie!) and it totally makes me laugh every time. When I was teaching, it was the photocopiers that drove me to the brink. "So long and thanks for all the fish" is the only appropriate way to end that video, I have to say. :D Enjoy every moment of your new 'wild and precious' life!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jaime! I think everyone in management should be Required to watch Office Space. Of course they'd probably miss the humor, but still, at least we'd all get to watch a movie. :) And I plan to do everything I can to treat my "wild and precious life" right. Starting with lemon scones and yoga in the actual, honest-to-god sunshine. :)
DeleteFREEEEEEEDOM! Enjoy it :D
ReplyDeleteSometimes the writing just has to step aside. Enjoy reading and I hope the insomnia subsides.
Have a lovely week :D
Thanks! I'm going to do my best to enjoy the hell out of it. :)
DeleteI am so proud of you for doing what you've done. It seems like we've been commiserating for years over our day jobs -- and to think I was freed from mine in March and you have now freed yourself from yours in October. What a great year for both of us!!!!
ReplyDeleteI hope you find much happiness in the days ahead as you learn to adjust -- I can't begin to tell you how wonderful it feels.
And that clip summed it all up nicely -- what I wouldn't have given to smack my old boss on the head with a rubber arm. :)
Congrats, Kris -- so well deserved...I can't wait to see what genius transpires from days spent in your hammock!
I would have paid BIG MONEY to see you hit your old boss over the head with a rubber arm. Maybe you should consider that an a new revenue stream. ;)
DeleteSeriously though, I don't think I would have survived the last year without being able to turn to you and say "You are never going to believe what my boss just said/did!" We might have just kept each other sane. (Of course, we'd have to be sane to begin with)
I think this next year is going to be chock full of Awesome for both of us. Can't wait. *hugs you 'till you pass out* :)
I am SO excited for you! SO impressed by your IT-takeover! Congratulations on this huge step. Happiness! Someday I hope to be able to do the same. :) Enjoy the rest of your week!
ReplyDeletecongrats on being freeeeee! I count reading as part of the writing job, what better way to learn about the mechanics of writing!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on being freeeee of your day job! What an exhilarating feeling! I've yet to read any of Diana Gabaldon's books, but I've heard great things. Perhaps it's time for me to check her out. Have a great week, Kris!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on fulfilling your dream to be free of the day job, Kris. I truly hope it works out to be the dream you want it to be, full of reading, writing, and all the outdoorsy stuff I know you love. All the very best to you! :D
ReplyDeleteThe word FREEEDOM sounds so sweet. I am happy for you and for your new adventure in this one wild life :)
ReplyDeleteOMG your IT-takeover is hilarious! I would have loved to see that. Enjoy your freedom!!! I'm totally jealous. :)
