What's Up Wednesday- July 2nd!

Summertime, Summertime & CP's of Awesome!

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly blog hop geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what's up.  Should you wish to join, check out Jaime's or Erin's lovely blogs and sign up with the link widget at the bottom of the post.

WHAT I'M READING

Books of the week:

AN ABUNDANCE OF KATHERINES- Smart, funny, wonderful in every way. I'll have to write a full review of this one later. Suffice it to say, I highly recommend it.

RED EARTH AND POURING RAIN- Wonderful imagery, complex and many layered. This book is not for everyone. An eighteenth-century warrior-poet is reincarnated into a typewriting monkey. All of the rich history of India is laid bare through one man's experience. And at 600+ pages, it's also heavy enough to weigh down your beachmat. (A stalwart for summer reads)

WHAT I'M WRITING

Words. (I'm guessing I should be more specific than that, but it really does sum it up very nicely) I wrote a chapter about how it's sometimes more important to be understood than to be loved. I wrote a bit about a freed slave who refused to leave because he would rather work for someone who wanted him to be free. I wrote some more words about how orchids are exceptional liars. I wrote two sentences that I truly loved. (and quite a few more that were just okay) In balance, I think those two sentences were worth the rest of the muddle. We'll see.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO/ WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW
  • I got to meet one of my CP's of Awesome in the Flesh!!! It was wonderful and surreal at the same time. (To meet someone you've chatted with online for Years, and then they are there in person and you can actually hug them!!!...Totally Surreal) She was only in town for a few hours so we just hung out at the beach, bounced around in the waves and talked about books. (She's probably also going to kill me for posting this picture of us, post-salty swim with way too much sun) (forgive me Andrea :)
  • I'm going to a Writer's Retreat in August (yay!) where I will get to meet another one of my CP's of Awesome. *dies on the floor* Honestly, when I started this whole writing thing, and this online "social" stuff, I had no idea it would lead to meeting Real People (who are Awesome in every respect)
  • Looking forward to the 4th of July celebrations. A friend of ours invited us to spend the 4th on his boat so we can watch the fireworks over the bay. I love fireworks. Best use of gunpowder Ever. (Celebrate your American Independence with a aerial display invented by the Chinese during the Song Dynasty (circa 960) and currently made in China) (Perhaps followed by some Freedom Fries) *grin* Nationalism. Gotta love it.

  1. AN ABUNDANCE OF KATHERINES is the only John Green novel I haven't read. I need to read it!

  2. Meeting your CPs in real life is fantastic, isn't it? I got to meet one of mine in New York last year and it was the best thing ever. Awesome that you got to meet one of yours in person! Looks like you two had a blast! And hooray for words, however many or however few. Quality words are hard to come by sometimes, so it's great that you got those worth-it sentences! I need more of those lol. Hope you have a wonderful week, Kris! :D

    1. Yeah, I don't know how many quality words I'm actually writing, but some weeks I'm happy I actually wrote actual words. (of any quality) Finding time to write has been super tricky lately.

Hope you have an amazing week too!

  5. I've got a CP of Awesome that only lives one state away from me, but we've never met. One of these days, we have to make it happen!

It is currently thundering where I'm at now and, much like when fireworks explode, I'm hiding under the blankets with the cats :)

    1. Cats are excellent company during thunderstorms. Mine takes it as his cue to sit on my head and make biscuits in my hair. (Rocking a seriously cute hairdo this morning because of it) :)

  6. Starting new stories is a lot of fun. One of these days I'm going to get to do that again.

    1. Multitasking after lunch=bad. Somehow this post ended up on the wrong blog. I'm going to wait until my digestion returns blood flow to my head before visiting any more blogs. :o

    2. Hah! I do that too! I must drink coffee *before* catching up on blog comments. Otherwise, I have a really tough time making sense and/or proving I'm not a robot. *grin*

  8. Jaime is my only main CP and I've most definitely met her lol. How many people can say they've known their CP for over 30 years? What a great setting to meet your CP in! That's a great shot of you two, and wow, that water is such an amazing colour!

The only John Green book I've read so far is TFIOS, so I really need to give some of his other books a try. Oddly, the shirt I'm wearing today has typewriting monkeys on the label, so hey, it must be a theme this week!

Your latest writing accomplishments sound wonderful, and I'm sure there's a lot more great stuff in that muddle! It's nice that there were two particularly lovely lines though!

Have a super 4th of July and enjoy watching those fireworks! :)

And this T-shirt you speak of with typing monkeys...I must have one. Stat. :)

  9. That is so cool that you got to meet one of your CPs in real life. I have this vision of someday having a big meet-up of all the awesome bloggers and CPs that I've met virtually. That would be an awesome party! But then they'd all find out what a big dork I am IRL and the jig would be up! Haha. Have fun on the 4th!
