WHAT I'M READING

THE HERE AND NOW- I got busy, so I'm still reading the same title as last week. I've done some science reading on the side, but very little else.

Which means I'm lagging a little behind in my YA Buccaneers Summer Reading Challenge. But hey, it's just for fun, so I'm not fussed. You can find out more about the Summer Reading Challenge Here.

WHAT I'M WRITING

I Finally sent ISIS out to CP's and Betas. (Much Rejoicing!) Now that I can tick that off my list, I can really start back in on LOVE AND OTHER CURIOSITIES and figure out how make the plot bunnies play nice.(mine are more like the rabbit in Monty Python's Holy Grail..."with large pointy teeth!") Also, who's bright idea was it to put a bunch of flashbacks in there?!! Oh yeah, mine.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO/ WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW
  • I've been helping Boy Chris out with his River Wildlife Surveys. One of the benefits of not having an Evil Day Job anymore is that if he calls up and says "Hey, do you want to go boating?", I can just say "Hells yes!" It's hard not to be inspired by that river. Sometimes it feels just like floating through a dream. Yesterday morning, a thunderstorm had just passed through and the light, the light was otherworldly! (There's no filter on that picture above.) The colors were so bright, that it feels like the beauty is etched upon my retina. And I felt like I was floating for hours even after we made it back to land.
  • Hanging out with Manatees. We've been having some amazing manatee days out on the water. One curious manatee kept coming right up to our kayaks and nuzzling them with her nose. She followed us around for about 2 hours! We've been campaigning hard to save the manatees and their habitat, I wonder if somehow the manatees have gotten word of our efforts and just wanted to say "thanks". *grin*

  1. I love that what you've been up to and what inspires you are the same thing. That's really the way life ought to be, and I'm going to keep that in mind this week. Love that manatee!

    1. Thanks Melanie! I realized a while ago that most of what I am doing out-of-doors is also the stuff that serves as my inspiration. (so I've been cheating and combining the categories) :)

Hope you have a great week!

    1. Thanks! But in the interest of full disclosure, the first pic was taken by me and our other awesome manatee shots were taken by Boy Chris. That one is from the Save the Manatees Campaign we're working on. Every time I try to take a manatee shot, all you can see are nostrils. :)

  3. That manatee! I kind of want to hug her. :-) That's so cool that she followed you around.

I have a WiP that has a bunch of flashbacks in it as well. I'm not currently working on that one, but it's definitely difficult bouncing back and forth between now and then sometimes. Have fun working on that WiP again. And good job sending out your story to your CPs and betas! I hope they give you all kinds of awesome feedback! :D Have a wonderful week, Kris!

    1. I think our little manatee would have hugged you right back. She was probably one of the friendliest manatees we've ever encountered. We tried to back off to give her a little more space and she was all "Wait, where are you going? I haven't nuzzled this boat yet." :)

Hope your week is wonderful too!

    1. Oh, I know they will. I'm in no hurry though. Another round of revisions on this one might kill me. *grin*

      Have a great week!

    1. I know! I love my job. (First time I've been able to say that in a loooong while) :)

Hope your week is grand! Congrats again on all the amazing stuff that's happening in your life right now.

  7. Okay, I'm totally squealing over that manatee picture and how she followed you for two hours! I'm cheering you on in your campaign to save their habitat. They just seem like such gentle creatures and it's sad that they get injured by motorboats and lose their homes. Humanity really is the greatest pest of all sometimes. Good luck in your efforts!

Your Monty Python plot bunnies totally cracked me up. I had to stop and watch the skit on Youtube for fun. Hope you get lots of awesome feedback from your CPs & betas! Have a lovely week!

    1. They are the most gentle creatures. People we take out kayaking often freak out a little bit at how big they are. (They are often longer than the kayaks themselves) But they are just gentle, curious creatures. But yes, sadly we've yet to see an adult manatee without boat prop scars. (It's actually how we keep track of individuals for the census) One of our dreams is to build a manatee refuge where they can have access to warm water, away from boat traffic.

And I think you might be the only person who got/laughed at the Monty Python reference. (Which of course just makes me love you more.) :)

      Have a wonderful week!

  8. Yay for sending out ISIS to betas! Hope they send you lots of good feedback. :)

Also, kayaking with manatees sounds incredible. My sister loves them, as do I - so they have a special place in our hearts. My co-blogger used to make a bunch of plushie manatees too.

    Have a great week!

  9. That top pic could inspire some WIPs! It makes me think about other dimensions and all kinds of science-y stuff.

Yay for ISIS going to beta camp.

  10. I am so glad you posted about manatees! My husband and I have been looking for a great place to take our kayaks, somewhere where we can (hopefully) see manatees. I looked online and found some good feedback on the Crystal River area. Thoughts? It's about 5 hours from where we live, so we want to make sure it'll be fabulous before we drive all that way. I'd love your expert opinion if you have a few minutes to give it. Thanks so much, Kris, and have a fantastic week!

  11. "It's a killer rabbit, I'm tellin' ya!" Hahaha... great Monty Python reference. :) Your photos are just gorgeous. I can't believe the water is that clear. Wow! I'm used to muddy Minnesota lakes and rivers. :) Have a fantastic week, Kris!

  12. I've never yet had an opportunity to see manatees IRL. They surely need to be saved. (Not just because I haven't seen them yet.) Good for you.
