The Fault in our Stars & Why Humans Should Purr

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly blog hop geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what's up.  Should you wish to join, check out Jaime's or Erin's lovely blogs and sign up with the link widget at the bottom of the post.

WHAT I'M READING

I finally read THE FAULT IN OUR STARS. This has been in my TBR pile for ages, but as I was familiar with the premise, I resisted for quite a while. Death and I haven't been on speaking terms since October and I was reluctant to change that. However, as the movie was coming out, I wanted to read it before the ensuing deluge of information ruined the Word Magic for me and went ahead and indulged in what was an absolutely stellar book. (And funnily enough, it helped.)

Boy Chris has long been a fan of the SciShow, hosted by John's brother Hank and their other collaborative projects. If you haven't seen the SciShow, you must. (I included a quickie one below, so you don't feel left out. Plus, this clip has made me consider taking up purring. :) Not only is the show informative, it is often pee-your-pants hilarious. This has led Boy Chris and I to add John Green and his brother Hank to our List of People We Would Like to Take Kayaking Who May Or May Not Take Us Up On Our Offer. (We wanted to invite Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips when he was in town, but we were afraid he would lick the wrong frogs.)

WHAT I'M WRITING

I finished my sneak peek for Book 2 of ISIS. I would really, really love to share a bit with you about it, but SPOILERS! And holy crap, may the Book Gods forgive me for what I'm going to put my poor characters through in Book 2. If ISIS was real, I'd have to watch my back. (In so many ways.)

Also, continuing to work on the script for our short film. (We're doing some short nature-based films to highlight some of Florida's natural areas.) Our biggest problem is going to be What To Leave Out. I don't want to leave anything out. But it's up for the Short Film category at the Film Festival. Key word being SHORT. (Blerg.)

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO/ WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW

I've been spending a lot of time considering my Writerly Path. (Thank the stars for twitter friends and writer friends who encourage you to think about things...sometimes more than you would like to be thinking about things) ;) Annnd there's a lot to think about. Indie & Legacy & Hybrid...Lions & Tigers & Bears (oh my)! Spent so much time at it, that I think I starting exhibiting Blogmata* at one point.

* Blogmata (Blög-mâ-tâ) : noun- The physical manifestation of reading too many Blogs as evidenced by blood coming out of your eyeballs.

What else have I been up to:
  • My crazy artist side was just nominated as a featured artist for really cool Underground Artist's Collective. It's a neat opportunity. But it means I will have to bust out a bunch of new pieces (in record time) then wrangle models and photoshoots and interviews and press packets. But I think it would be worth it. And my Ridiculousness would be featured in over 60 cities...and that's no small thing.
  • Seeing how long I can subsist on hummus and mango smoothies. (It's been very hot here and the only cooking I feel like doing is grilling veggie dogs at the beach.)
  • We've been rewatching all three seasons of Sherlock. They nailed that show. Nailed it.

  1. There really are so many options these days, it's hard to decide which is the best path - best to go with what's right for you and your books! :)

Glad to hear you loved TFIOS! I can't wait to watch it on the big screen.

    1. Thanks! Although Nailing It...not so sure about that. Muddling through is sort of my wheelhouse. ;)

  3. I had a difficult time approaching TFIOS given mine and Erin's personal experience with cancer, but I'm so glad I gave it a shot. What a wonderful book, and so powerful too. I haven't gotten a chance to see the movie yet, but I'm hoping to soon. With a handful of tissues of course.

Blogmata...hehe. Yes, I've had that before, I'm sure. There is just so much info out there about all kinds of publishing, and so much research to be done. I hope you were able to find what you were looking for! This short film you're working on sounds fascinating! I can't even imagine how tough it would be to squeeze everything in that you want. That's what I'm like with writing, which is a bit of a pain when it comes to revisions.

Hope you have a wonderful week all around, Kris! :D

  4. Whaaaat?!?! Congrats on getting nominated for the artist-thingie! Lady, that is AWWWWESOME!!!! :) Wowza.

I'm glad you took the leap and read TFIOS ... it's one of those books with lots of hype, but it's 100% hype-worthy.

Writerly path! If you ever want to chat about this kind of thing, let me know. I have all sorts of Thoughts ...

  6. I put off reading TFIOS for a long time because the subject matter hit way too close to home, but when I finally got around to reading it I was glad I did. John Green's use of humor balanced out the sadness well and made the story unforgettable, as opposed to many other books that have attempted to tackle the same topic in a more heavy handed way.

Thanks for the heads up on the SciShow! I hadn't heard of it, but that little episode was so funny and informative! I think I'll be assigning those to my son for some educational summer viewing. Seeing as he's a Bill Nye fan, I'm sure he'll get a kick out of these. Man, those green boys are talented! They should definitely go kayaking with you! (and "lick the wrong frogs" totally made me laugh out loud)

Sounds like big congratulations are in order for finishing your sneak peak of Isis 2 and being chosen as a feature artist for this Underground Artist's Collective! You rock! Hope work is going well on those new pieces (would love to see them!) and that contemplating your writerly path is yielding some insight. I think I have Blogmata too. So much to consider. Have a super week, Kris!

  7. Congrats on being chosen as a featured artist!!! That's amazing and good luck with it all!
I think I went through blogmata during the A-Z challenge in April!

  8. Congrats on being nominated for the Artist Collective!

My tabby cat purrs when he's hungry. He comes over, so friendly and happy-sounding, and I think, "Oh! He loves me!" But no, he just wants me to feed him. He uses his purrs to get what he wants.

I think I could subsist on hummus for quite awhile. But I'd need chips to go with it.

  9. I loved TFIOS and am looking forward to seeing the movie soon. I kind of wanted to wait until the theaters were a little less full so I can cry in (somewhat) peace. Haha.

Congrats on your nomination! And good luck with all of your projects--if your short film is anything like the nature photos you share with us, I know it'll be amazing.

I hear you about figuring out your writing path. Keep writing and hopefully the right answer will come to you. :)
