What's Up Wednesday- Feb. 19th

How is it Wednesday again already?!!!!!

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what's up.  Should you wish to join, check out Jaime's or Erin's lovely blogs and sign up with the link widget at the bottom of the post.

WHAT I'M READING
I'm currently beta reading a couple of WiP's from my CP's of Awesome. (That's a real title. It's going on a Tshirt which is the definition of "Real") I have some amazingly talented writers for CP's. I cannot wait for their books to be on the shelves so you guys can read them too!

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO

This month is getting away from me. I mean, how is it Wednesday again already?! We're in full Spring Break mode down here. Which for me and my EcoTour business means, busy, busy, busy. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. But we've got two back-to-back trips today, including a sunset paddle. And then we're back at it again in the early morning. So I'll probably be washing boats in the dark tonight and then getting up at the crack of dawn to do it again.

Still, a couple of things I love about this whole adventure. 1) No cubicle. I can't believe I didn't do this years ago! and 2) I LOVE taking people kayaking. I love showing them new things. I love getting out in nature. I love being out on the water. Everyone we take out is happy and laughing. I've lost count of how many hugs I've gotten at the end of the tour. (One 85 year-old grandpa even wanted to take us out for ice cream. Super sweet!) Now when did that ever happen at Evil Day Job?! Ummm...never.

WHAT I'M WRITING

I've gotten very little writing done in the last week. I've got to figure out how to budget even just a little bit more time to writing. Even if I just cram in 30 minutes here and there.

I'm thinking of signing up for a few more YA Buccaneers Word Sprints, because that will force me to make time for my writing. Priorities people. :)

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW

We finally came up with a band name. I'm not sure if that means I can stop putting "band" in quotations now. If we have a name does that make us a real band? Don't answer that. But we're playing a couple of gigs so that's something, right? Here's hoping I don't get up on stage and forget all my own songs. This could happen.

Oh, but I didn't tell you the name. I'll post a pic. (see pic) Yes, it's kind of a weird name. We're weird people. Also, everything else we thought of was either A) Already taken or B) Sucked in a Big Way. But it kind of fits the sound. We're a little bit Dirty. And we are definitely a strange Pack.

What do you think? And be honest, this is for posterity.

p.s. For those of you that got the Princess Bride reference there, I thought I'd share this. Boy Chris and I decided last night that if we ever get hitched, we are going to bribe the Preacher/Pastor or whatever to get up there and say: "Maaaarwage, maaarwage is what bwings us toogevah today." (Pontiff hat and everything.) Now you want to come to our fictional wedding, don't you?  :)

p.p.s. I'm sorry if that offended anybody. Still doing it anyway though, just to see the look on my mother's face.

  1. I'm glad you're enjoying the new day job, Kris. It was one heckuva risk you took, but it seems to be paying off in ways that matter most. Yes--please join in some #YABWordSprints. They are very helpful--they have been to me, anyway.

When it comes to band names, I think you create your own awesome. Think of band names in the past: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, R.E.M., Justin Bieber... j/k.... Seriously, whoever would think those are cool names today? But they MADE them cool by being great bands that people loved. And Dirtwolf is as good a name as any, if not better than most. So go for it--make music and have fun. :)

May your writing week be cooler than the snows of Sochi, and your words hotter than the Florida swamps in summer. :)

    1. Thanks Colin!! And I think you hit the nail on the head with band names. We're all about making music and having fun so I think we're going to just make our own awesome even if we're the only ones who think so. ;)

And that last line of your comment made me laugh out loud! Too funny.

Hope you have a great writing week too! :)

  2. Best of luck fitting in more writing time, Kris. I have weeks like too, where time just seems to slip away without me even noticing. I love hearing about your eco tours, and I'm very intrigued by them. I'm going to be headed down to your area this summer for a mini-family reunion and I'm wondering if an eco tour might be something fun for us to do. Anyway, have a wonderful week, Kris!

    1. Thanks Katy! And I would be happy to take you and yours out paddling any time, just drop me a line when you're in the area. :)

Hope your week is blissful and full of amazing words!

  3. I got married in a bar, so I'm all for non-traditional ;)

Yay for band names! And gigs!

And aww to the man offering to take you out for ice cream. I never got ice cream when I worked in an office, either, that's for sure. Blazing our own paths FTW!

    1. I LOVE it that you got married in a bar! I think I want to jump off a sailboat into the water at mine, dress and all. Not sure how to pull all that off, especially since marriage still scares the pants of me, but it's nice to consider your options. ;)

  4. Okay, I actually snorted out loud at that wedding scenario. Seriously do it! I would LOVE to witness that. I like the new band name. It feels memorable because it isn't necessarily two words you'd put together, you know? And I think memorable is certainly something you'd want to go for. Sounds like you've been super busy these days. So happy that it's doing something you love. (How sweet was that grandpa and the ice cream? So sweet. :D) Have a great week, Kris!

    1. I *think* I might have snort-laughed just typing that. It's kind of hard not to crack up at that Princess Bride moment. There's no way we could do it with a straight face.

And yay that you like the band name. One of my other top choices was Wanderlust, but there's already about a million bands called that.

Hope you have a great week too!

Also, I'm so glad your EcoTours business is going so well. It sounds wonderful!

  6. Good luck to you and the rest of DirtWolf on you upcoming gigs!

I'm so glad your new cubical free life is going so great. I'm always jealous of your adventure updates. You are totally living the dream right now, so enjoy it. And definitely eat ice cream with as many friendly 85 year old paddlers as you can find.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

    1. Thanks Kate! I do kind of feel like I'm living the dream these days. It's funny that I agonized over the decision to quit my day job for so long, because now I don't think I could ever go back. :)

Hope your week is wonderful too!

  7. DIRTWOLF. I like it.
I recently saw on FB a pic of someone who had a full-out Princess Bride themed wedding where they were dressed up like the characters and everything. I really hope their priest talked like that too.

    1. Yay, glad you like it!

And I think I would draw the line at the costumes part. I don't think I could pull off Princess Buttercup...nor would I want to. ;)

  8. nature is incredible. I wish I could go kayaking with you, although I'd probably end up in the water since I've never been! Having talented CPs makes all the difference, and to be the first to read their work is humbling.

    1. Nature is amazing. I find more to be amazed at every single day. And I'd take you paddling any time. And you wouldn't even end up in the water. :)

  9. This sunset paddling sounds like fun. So glad for you that it's working out :-) Scheduling in writing time can be difficult sometimes and it's true that those sprints usually help!
    Wishing you a wonderful week!

    1. The sunset paddle was a blast. Sunset is the best time to see dolphins, so it's always one of my favorites.

And I'm with you, scheduling writing time in a busy life can be a bear sometimes. More sprinting needed over here. ;)

  10. Kris, I love everything about his post! First, hurrah for ditching the day job and being so busy with the kayaking tours. Um, that is so, so awesome! (And it sounds a bit exhausting, but awesome too!) I think the name Dirtwolf (one word?) is weird and cool. Two thumbs up. (You probably know by now that I'm a big weirdo, so you might want to take my opinion with a grain of weirdo.)

Hurray for reading CP things that make you happy! I get so inspired by reading my friends' work! *eyes Kris* Anytime you want a ready, lady, I'm here!

Also, Princess Bride-style weddings FTW. This is so fantastic. :) :) :)

  11. It amazes me that you can do that much kayaking every day! Your EcoTour business sounds so demanding but fulfilling at the same time. I hope you can find a little time to relax and maybe write a bit this week.

Your new band name sounds great. I love wolves, so of course I'd think so. And the Princess Bride wedding idea is hilarious. You should totally do that! Honestly, weddings can be a royal pain in the butt all said and done, so if you go that route, have fun with it!
